Decision

After another half a week of tossing ideas around, I think I have decided to stop blogging for now. It doesn’t seem worth the stress and concerns and the things I like about itΒ  (paying attention to the presentation of food would be one πŸ™‚ nothing like photographing things to make you attend to aesthetics!) I’m sure I’ll keep in a non-official sense.

Busy!

Goodness this has been a hectic week. Sometimes I really don’t know where the time goes! This isn’t even a real post – just a post to say I don’t have time to post but will soon.

One good great thing is that my parents get back this afternoon! I’m excited to see them and hear about their trip (it was part business for my dad and part holiday). I’m sure they’ll have some great photos…they spent a week in Venice and it sounds amazing. I’m also excited to move back to my place properly; I miss it!

I will post ‘properly’ soon. But to liven up 5 lines of text, I thought I’d throw in some Venice photos for good measure πŸ™‚

I think I might have mentioned that my parents are away at the moment, which is why I’m only at my place part-time and am semi-based at their house.  They get back on Thursday so we’ll be doing a postponed mothers day celebration with my mum next weekend.

My dad’s parents live about an hour away from here though, so I had thought to visit them for a little while this afternoon, given that it’s kind of grandmothers’ day too. However, when I rang on Friday, the conversation somehow ended with them coming to us for lunch (us being my 2 younger siblings and I). This possibly tells you quite a lot about my grandmother lol. I promptly went into panic mode after getting off the phone to her, because formal family lunches stress me out somewhat at the best of times, never mind when I’m responsible for hosting things! I know this probably sounds like an overreaction (ok, I know it probably is an overreaction), but nonetheless. My younger brother, incidentally, was even more panicked and he wasn’t going to have to do anything except turn up at the table!

Anyway. I decided I would keep things very simple! I hit the supermarket yesterday and got some different sorts of breads/rolls, lots of salad things, and cheese, dip and turkey. Because I wanted to go to the gym this morning and my grandmother said they’d get to us “late morning”, I also got up at 7.30am to get things ready. Late morning in my grandmother’s language usually means about 10.30am, so there wasn’t that much time to spare!

Things ended up looking like this:

017

In more detail…

White rolls, little wholemeal rolls, and soy and linseed bread

Grated cheese (top); low fat sandwich turkey, crackers, and sweet chilli cream cheese (bottom)

Carrot and celery sticks with hommus

Salad :) Lettuce, tomato, carrot, cucumber, sweet pepper (in orange), mushroom, celery

Very straightforward, nothing fancy, nothing that needed heating, and things that everyone could serve themselves from. I also put together a plate of cookies and little tarts and the like, but foolishly forgot to take a photo of that. Usually if I was to have people to lunch (except I wouldn’t, because I’d make it breakfast or dinner – lunch as an entertaining option doesn’t excite me at all!) I would do something more impressive than this, but I really was aiming for simplicity.

Well, when I got back from the gym, my sister told me that my grandmother had rung to say they wouldn’t be coming to lunch afterall! They’re in the process of moving/selling their house at the moment, and they had a last minute call from the estate agent to arrange a viewing late morning. Instead, they came by for a little while in the afternoon,  which was of course the sort of arrangement I’d been angling for from the start. Lol. I could have just saved myself the stress and slept in for another half an hour!

Anyway. At least we have lots of salad-type stuff ready to use for dinner now πŸ˜› And I know I probably sound hugely overdramatic anyway.

On a side note, I am looking forward to my parents getting back! In part to hear about their trip and see them, and in part so I can go back to my home πŸ™‚

It is theoretically autumn here at the moment – which, incidentally, is my favourite season – but this week the temperatures are forecast at 27-28’C every day. Every one! I know this is theoretically a good thing, but I am really ready for some winter weather about now. The idea of winter clothes and snuggling up by the heater sound pretty good to me. But I guess winter will be here soon enough, and then I’ll no doubt complain about the cold πŸ˜›

Until the weather catches up, I’m pretending it’s cooler by drinking (instant low calorie) hot chocolate…

It has a caramel twist to it too πŸ™‚

I’m also in the process of deciding on dinner. Current ideas count? Nil. Some nights I really just feel like going with cereal lol. I will come up with something though…I’ll plan to post about it next time, which should motivate me away from the cereal option and towards something a little more balanced…

I didn’t have the best start to today. Nothing actually went wrong – in some ways thatΒ  would be better as I’d have an excuse to have a bad day – but I woke up feeling very blah. It seemed my hair had a private party overnight and ended up in an extreme state of overexcitement (read, pointing in all directions and unable to be subdued), I had 2 pimples on my chin, and I felt seriously bloated. Possibly this is pms…whatever it was it didn’t make for a happy start to the morning! I even felt like sleeping in longer and skipping the gym, which happens pretty rarely for me. I often don’t want to get up (my alarm goes off at 5.30am) but I usually want to go to the gym and that spurs me out of bed. Today I would have happily stayed under the covers, but I went anyway. I pretty much always do. I knew I would feel 100 times worse if I didn’t go than if I did! I can’t say I actually felt better after going to the gym, but I was at least up and moving. And the day kind of improved from there so I guess that’s the main thing!

I did at least enjoy lunch today. I took something both usual and unusual for me. I have wraps quite often, but I almost always have them with green salad. Today, however, the vegetables were all red and orange…I just wasn’t in the mood for green πŸ˜›

Phase 1...red pepper, carrot and tomato

Phase 1...red pepper, carrot and tomato

I took this with me to add in at lunch time (in the absence of lettuce, I figured it might go soggy otherwise):

Phase 2...tuna

Phase 2...tuna

The ‘Japanese style’ equates to tuna with soy, ginger and wasabi…

The wrap base was a piece of mountain bread (in oat flavour/variety):

For a snack in the afternoon I took 2 plums from this bowl:

I figured the whole bowl made a nicer picture than 2 plums by themselves πŸ™‚

On a completely separate topic, I just saw some recent (or supposedly recent) pictures of Allegra Versace. I find seeing pictures of her to be completely heartbreaking. She is clearly so unwell, and must presumably be so unhappy, and it’s been years now that pictures of her looking skeletal have been circulating. I know people can’t force changes if the person in question doesn’t want/ isn’t ready to change (and I think she’s been in treatment many times anyway), but it sometimes seems that the whole world is just going to sit back and watch her die. It doesn’t seem right.

On that sombre note, I’m signing off…here’s to a happier start to tomorrow.

Swine flu alert?

I have to say, I’m finding the whole swine flu situation a tad disconcerting. One step away from a world pandemic (at the last I heard anyway) doesn’t sound too good to me! I suppose this is one time to be glad I live in a relatively isolated country. I feel sorry for the people of Mexico – even aside from the horrible health risks, this can’t be good for their country/economy/tourism.

I had a lucky score today. A *free* polar monitor!! We had a massive sort out in one of the places I work, which isΒ a research centre where my research group focuses on childhood obesity. One of the things we had bought about a year ago but never managed to effectively use in the assessment process is a polar monitor. They were going to throw it out/give it awayΒ in a de-cluttering effort, so I asked if I could have it instead πŸ˜€ It is the most basic model so it only does heart rate and time; no calories and no capacity to link in with a foot pod to measure distance. But it is definitely better than nothing! I probably won’t get my head around how it works before going to the gym tomorrow morning, but I’ll definitely try it on my outdoor run on Saturday.

I don’t have many food photos to post. I’m back and forth between my place and my parents place at the moment, whilst they’re away and my siblings are by themselves, so photographing food becomes a bit more complicated. I did snap a frothy coffee (I buy these ‘skim cappuccino’ sachets that produce quite realistic froth without the need for a coffee machine) and a snack of a pear and peach:

Β

The peach was delicious! The pear less so. One downside of heading into winter (which I love, as far as seasons go) is that the fruit gets much less exciting. I’m really not a big banana or orange person, so it pretty much leaves apples, pears and mandarins. Not quite as good as apricots and plums and peaches and mangoes and grapes! Lol.

I will endeavour to have more photos next time πŸ™‚
